More misery for United as Vidic suffers knee ligament damage in Champions League defeat

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage.
The Serbia international twisted his knee shortly before the interval during United's Champions League defeat at Basle and left the field on a stretcher.

Vidic went down in obvious pain after a tangle of legs involving Marco Streller and was immediately replaced by Jonny Evans.
On a disappointing night for United after crashing out of the Champions League, manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the defender had suffered medial knee ligament damage.

'We don't know with Vidic,' Ferguson said. 'It's certainly medial ligament but hopefully that's the worst it is.'
Vidic was seen leaving the St Jakob's Park Stadium on crutches and could face up to four months on the sidelines.
